Duet, Mary & Martha
We learn about the sisters, Mary and Martha, in the New Testament. Martha, encumbered about with care, was busy. Her attention is down, earthward, her arms are full of chores that must be done, her offerings of love. Mary sat at the feet of the Savior and was taught by Him. The book she holds represents our personal communication with Father in Heaven. We are told she chose the better part. Every woman is both Mary and Martha. Competing concerns give us the opportunity to make daily choices. If we neglect either part of ourselves, the spiritual or the physical, we are incomplete and unhappy. Although one is ‘the better part’, both qualities are necessary and praiseworthy. Tied together with flowing skirts, the two figures form a graceful, single whole. Every day we can be mindful of the balance we seek.
